ive been google and searched in debian/ubuntu forums to solve my issue with pidgin.. I already have 'gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad libgstreamer-plugins-base0.10-dev' but when trying to compile pidgin (latest) it still say "Install the necessary gstreamer and farsight packages first.".. wwhere is the problem?
ferro
http://developer.pidgin.im/wiki/Installing%20Pidgin#Compiling
read it
if it stil fails, use the http://www.pidgin.im/support/
Napta

ferro
yeah, i've looked over that
:]
denken
ferro: have you used any of these tools like shmus, tentakel, rgang, pydsh, etc. ?
ferro
denken: na, ssh -c over all IPs in a list as they share users

APz
http://mostly-harmful.net/?page=19.2009 - mouse traps; the often overlooked option to protect your servers against rootkit planting ninjas.
CompWizrd
what about through the ceiling?
or the raised floor?
APz
mousetraps.
all over the place.
you can forget your firewalls, mousetraps are the real solution.
CompWizrd
what about ninja's dropping on cat6 frmo the ceiling?!
APz
there's mousetraps in ventilation ducts.
CompWizrd
ahh
APz
mousetraps are a fool proof way of securing your datacenter.
CompWizrd
what if i have trained cockroaches?
APz
hmm, I wonder if the mouse traps could be miniatyrized so they'd also work on cockroaches...
CompWizrd
mount roach traps on the cheese parts
roach trips it, mousetrap fires and fires the roach trap across the room, and hopefully hits the mice
Napta
morning
savera
hi there
damn its cold
cold is bad for the bones
pretty grim whats happening in greece
wonder if they will drop the euro
Napta
meh, stupid L2TP overwrites my DNS suffix search order
whats happening?
(Action) is not down with the news
savera
Napta bankruptcy
Tohsh
is there a trick to getting my /etc/rc.local to actually execute on startup? Mine doesn't seem to be doing it. debian 5 btw
Napta
Tohsh: Have you read the debian faq? they recommend you use update-rc.d(1) to add startup scripts
rc.local is dead
Get out of that nasty habbit and comply with LSB
http://www.debian.org/doc/FAQ/ch-customizing.en.html
Tohsh
kk thanks
Napta
savera: ?!
APz
napta, have you already set the mouse traps?!
Napta
cock, locked and ready to rock, APz
it's ~ -14C around here
good time to defrost the freezer
just put all the stuff in a box and haul it outside
Napta
APz: We utilize cloud computing. Mice can't fly
As far as I know
APz
yes, but it's the ninjas I'm worried about!
Napta
eh, I think our cloud altitude is around 20,000ft where ninjas cannot go!
Tohsh
rcx.d is very confusing to me.
is it bad for me to use rc.local?
Napta
Tohsh: It really depends what you're doing. Usually yes
Tohsh
im trying to start rtorrent on startup
Napta
hehe
APz
put it in your crontab
Tohsh
i wouldnt know what that means.
Napta
Is there a startup script for rtorrent ?
APz
usually no
Tohsh
all i could find was " su - user -c "/usr/bin/screen -dmS rtorrent /usr/local/bin/rtorrent" "
Napta
THEN WE WILL WRITE ONE!
APz
I guess most just screen it and leave it there
Napta
well, APz will write one
APz: werd
Tohsh
id rather not screen it
but couldnt find anything else
Napta
does it use XML-RPC?
Tohsh
yes
Napta
so you don't need to interact with the binary directly?
Tohsh
no
Napta
Sounds like a reasonable case to stick it in a startup script
Tohsh
indeed
APz
if it's supposed to be run as some user and not root, i'd put it in crontab
Napta
yeah, I wouldn't put the startup script in your username, Tohsh
your script will have to su(1)/sudo(1)
APz
I personally run rtorrent in a screen in my nat box
Tohsh
right now i have it su'ing..
APz
and use it via ssh
Tohsh
im using wtorrent with it
so i dont need it screened
*rutorrent actually
Napta
You could supervise it!
Tohsh
lol
Napta
If you want to be really elite, you can stick it in inittab to spawn once
APz
it's curses-based, I think you can't just fire it up in the background
Napta
AIX style
its curses based?!
DIDNT I JUST ASK ABOUT XML-RPC AND INTERRACTION?!
is there a -D flag?
to daemonize
APz
not that I know of
Napta
Tohsh: Then you need to listen to APz
APz
every guide about it tells you to d-tach or screen the process
Napta
thats why it's screened in the examples
as it needs a pty
Tohsh
kk
im guessing i still dont want it in rc.local though
with su permission
Napta
nope
APz
no, start with from crontab's @reboot-job
Napta
^ I like that
Tohsh
k gotta figre out how to do that
Napta
paste it, APz !
what the heck did I just do. I went to www.gl apparently
and it exists
APz
@reboot /usr/bin/screen -dmS rtorrent rtorrent
I think that might do it
Napta
beautiful
Tohsh
ive never used crontab before.
APz
the last one is the executable name; you might have to put full path there
Napta
Tohsh: Do you use the vi editor?
APz
mine's installed at /usr/local/bin/rtorrent, but I'm not using linux
Tohsh
yes
Napta
crontab -e
and paste apz' line
Tohsh
testing
APz
to be sure, use the executable's full path as the last parameter
use "which rtorrent" to figure out where it is
Napta
I personally just modify /etc/crontab so I don't have to check every user's crontab spool for backups
APz
and then use something like:
@reboot /usr/bin/screen -dmS rtorrent /usr/bin/rtorrent
or where ever it was in debian
Tohsh
local bin
APz
why it's there?
Tohsh
> /usr/local/bin/rtorrent
Napta
Wibla: Backing up my NAS content to a cloud online storage service hah
APz
didn't you install it from the debian's packages?
Tohsh
no
compiled it
Napta
:(
why
APz
oh
Tohsh
why did i compile it?
Napta
ya
Tohsh
to gain more knowledge i guess
Napta
habbit? newer version?
fair enough
Tohsh
lol
Napta
just thought I'd ask
Tohsh
it was a newer version too
from their svn
APz
I installed my version from freebsd's ports
added couple of patches aswell
really liked the one that adds color to the UI
Napta
We have this generic best practice in the #debian/sysadmin world to use distro supported packages whereever possible, Tohsh
You inherit automatic security updates and bugfixes, etc
APz
^ Yes, listen to him. he's old and wise
Napta
Where as compiling software you're on your own with keeping it up to date
well, wise
APz
(*disclaimer: napta might not be as old or as wise as indicated)
Napta
:D
haha
Tohsh
lol
Napta
4 days to upload 30GB, bleh
bring on my 200Mbit
Tohsh
didnt seem to work
is there a log?
Napta
yeah
Im sure the last time I checked only BSD supported @reboot voodo
o
but im probably wrong
phyber
if you mean @reboot in crontab, debian can do it.
APz
vixie cron can do it
phyber
if something else, then you want crontab. crontab will solve it.
webserver? crontab. sshd? crontab.
APz
and debian uses that, last I checked
Napta
probably
Tohsh
wonder why it didnt work then
APz
condoms? crontab
Napta
This was a while ago
Tohsh
do i need quotes?
APz
anal rape - crontab.
Napta
Tohsh: is cron running?
pgrep -lf cron
Tohsh
2136 /usr/sbin/cron
Napta
cool
pgrep -lf screen
?
Tohsh
no
Napta
/var/log:)
APz
napta, see "man 5 crontab", it has a list of all the special 'dates' for cron
Napta
APz: yep, I just don't have a linux box to hand :)
cba to man 5 crontab in google
Tohsh
what log am i looking for in here
Napta
So I get to work at like, 8am/8:30 - my co workers turn up at hmm 10:30 ?
office is still empty according to the webcam
APz
http://www.phpman.info/index.php/man/crontab/5
Napta
Tohsh: You want the syslog file
phpman?
Tohsh
http://pastebin.org/65091
Napta
