Skeeter-: install kernel-package and read its documentation
Skeeter-
i was stating it has an exemple
compiling isnt hard, making it worka n bootable is sth else
_Dave123_
wols_: yes, and i specified 2 ports?
wols_: or, not really understand what u mean
fruitwerks
ok I have a working kernel now.. can someone help me move my install back to /dev/sda3?
wols_
back from where?
some things make me speechless: < fruitwerks> I have been using Gentoo for 10 years - I will pick it up quickly lol
fruitwerks
haha
I'm bad with copy and rsync operations
I have my install on dev/sda2 and I need to move it to /dev/sda3
roe
is there a 'Debian Way' to install vmware tools?
Titan8990
wols_: using gentoo can give you an in-depth understanding of how things work in linux. this knowledge can cary over to other distros
bpgoldsb
Back in 2003, with no experience with linux, and being 17 years old, I was roped in to doing my first linux install.

wols_
Et tu Titan8990?
bpgoldsb
It was Gentoo with no internet
I can testify that Gentoo will teach you A LOT about linux.
fruitwerks
ok so I have way more than a base install, so don't tell me to bootstrap again :p
bpgoldsb
Mostly because you're always running around fixing broken crap :P
fruitwerks
*nod*
... mount -o bind / ...? anyone
wols_
!tell fruitwerks about bind mount
fruitwerks
yeah I know bind mount.. I want to copy my root fs to a diff partition - properly
_Dave123_
wols_: any idea where i can find that rfc spec?
SPF
_Dave123_: google 1st hit: http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc959.html
rhineheart_m
bpgoldsb: please confirm this.. I can't use the used 228.39 GB anymore coz it has been used by the volume group.. correct?
bohne
hi, on a fresh installed debian, with changed to xen kernel, i get: http://pastebin.com/FxLA38cM
after configuring dom0 for 3 additional IP's , is there anyone who can help?
restarting networking causes: Reconfiguring network interfaces...SIOCADDRT: File exists
fruitwerks
oh I hate that issue
bohne
fruitwerks: had or hate? ;)
fruitwerks
both
_Dave123_
SPF: yes, but i need examples
bohne
fruitwerks: do you have any hint?
fruitwerks
I recall it means the rout for the IP is already configured
Titan8990
bohne: ifdown <interface>; ifup <inferface>; instead of the init script
bohne
Titan8990: mh its a remote server, will i lost the connection?;)
Titan8990
bohne: yes, but you were going to lose the connection from restarting the init script too

bohne
Titan8990: i didn't so far, i'll try.. i can reboot it on demand if necessary
ifdown: interface eth0 not configured
mquin
48
bohne
Titan8990: this si strange because ifconfig shows eth0 clearly
Titan8990
bohne: pastebin you /etc/network/interfaces
bohne
Titan8990
bohne: where are the IPs you added?
fruitwerks
what do I need in /dev/ to boot?
bohne
Titan8990: currently commented out
Titan8990
bohne: oh, you added routes.. not IPs
bohne
Titan8990: line 16 to 18
Titan8990: yes, sorry
Titan8990
bohne: just add the routes in manually, unless you wanted to test it to make sure it works properly
bohne
Titan8990: i put back all changes that i made, but networking restart
Titan8990
bohne: actually... what do you expect those routes to do?
bohne
Titan8990: what you mean with "manually"?
Titan8990: the server ist hosted by a provider, and i've installed xen and i want to host 3 xen vm's on this machine
Titan8990: i already did that with another server without any problem, absolutlty the same..
Titan8990
bohne: route add -host 78.46.52.204 gw 78.46.52.204; this is telling your machine that in order to get to 78.46.52.204, it needs to send traffic to... 78.46.52.204.
bohne: I am just saying, I highly doubt those routes do anything at all
bohne: and by manually, I mean using the "route" command
bohne
Titan8990: i followed this tutorial: http://wiki.hetzner.de/index.php/Xen_auf_einem_EQ_4_mit_Debian_Lenny_64Bit_und_4_IP%27s
Titan8990: see the routes in the middle of the page, its in english
mryanbrown
when doing a dpkg-buildpackage im getting fakeroot debian/rules error exit status 2
Titan8990
bohne: I would try without first. I still don't think they would do anything, and I had to do nothing of the sort for my dom0
mryanbrown
does dpkg have a log somewhere?
Titan8990
mryanbrown: build.log in source directory
bohne
Titan8990: This is cause in the networking setup of hetzner, the ip-packets will be deliverd only to the mac-address of the physical interface. Xen set up an own mac-address for every ip, so the ip-packets for the additional ip's wouldn't be delivered without this entries.
Titan8990
mryanbrown: did you create your debian/rules file?
mryanbrown
the dh_make -f created a skeleton one
Titan8990
bohne: I saw that, go for it
mryanbrown: have you already read the NMG?
mryanbrown
yeah, and took from it as much as I can/ esp all the importance of the proper copyright file etc
JyZyXEL
can dmesg timestamps be converted to real time?
mryanbrown
ive actually got 4 diff guides open
jigsawwing info together
Titan8990
mryanbrown: pastebin your rules file
mryanbrown

oh heey
i chould try verbose first

JyZyXEL: /var/log/kern.log

mryanbrown: #debian-mentors on oftc
JyZyXEL
oh cool
Titan8990
mryanbrown: nothing obvious to me so head to where the packaging experts are

pickcoder
I've not changed the configs on a samba share... but I've moved a mount-point server to a newer release of a diff distro
same freaking mount statement... perm denied errors regardless of how I configure the gorups
what's pissing me off is the fact that it works fine in Windoze
but not in Linux
ok.. this is wierd.. perm denied error but the file shows up
touch: setting times of `tst': Permission denied

I am evaluating the possibility of upgrading to testing. I've heard that hal and udev are no longer present. How does hw gets recognized on testing. If i am to drive a bumpy road. I want to know a few things in advanced :)
pickcoder
argh.. nobody.nogroup
Hydroxide
tharkun: udev is still present. hal is deprecated but IIRC not gone
tharkun: nobody is planning to eliminate udev

can i allow root login in kdm? like in gdm?
xxtjaxx
Hi everyone can somebody help me setup wordpress on my system?
Im using lighttp
Titan8990
xxtjaxx: wordpress has extensive documentation....
xxtjaxx
can you point me to one fitting debian and lighttp?
Titan8990
xxtjaxx: either aptitude install wordpress and read docs in /usr/share/doc/wordpress/ or grab the upstream tarball and follow their docs
User_007
hello, everytime i login (in gdm) it takes about 10 seconds to load gnome. There is a way to shorten this time or move the load time for boot?
(i use Debian Squeeze AMD64, with readahead-fedora pkg)
Titan8990
User_007: readahead-fedora?
cahoot
hostname lookup that times out?
eshat
I just got the new Thinkpad X201 but the Key combination for suspend does not work,... there is even no xev event, any idea ?
User_007
Titan8990, is the readahead package for squeeze
Titan8990
User_007: what does fedora have to do with it?
User_007
how could i know, i downloaded from debian servers
look for the package readahead
cahoot
Titan8990: it's debians name for the package so ...
User_007
Titan8990, http://packages.debian.org/squeeze/readahead
Titan8990
judd: versions readahead-fedora
judd
readahead-fedora -- sid: 2:1.5.4-5; squeeze: 2:1.5.4-5
Titan8990
ah, >= squeeze
babilen
Titan8990: readahead was developed by fedora hence the name
User_007
there is a way to start gnome faster after gdm?? like speedup it or load with boot?
Titan8990
babilen: yeah, but its simply "readahead" in lenny
babilen
ah
*shrug*
wpgmb
Hi, this is not specific to Debian (Squeeze) I believe, but I wonder if someone can help? Network manager applet 0.8 shows the wrong connection information. I thought that bug was fixed? If it is, what am I doing wrong?
User_007
there is a way to start gnome faster after gdm?? like speedup it or load with boot?
Bombo
how do i disable ipv6 in squeeze? i added /etc/modprobe.d/aliases.conf alias net-pf-10 off alias ipv6 off and rebooted, but according to netstat gdm is still just listening on udp6
babilen
!noipv6
dpkg
[noipv6] To disable use of <IPv6> on Lenny: echo "install ipv6 /bin/true" >> /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf (and reboot for the changes to take effect). From Squeeze onwards, IPv6 is built into the kernel, add the kernel command line option "ipv6.disable=1" to your bootloader.
addikt1ve
hi
hi :)
Bombo
oh
addikt1ve
I'd like to update my server from lenny to sid
Bombo
kay
addikt1ve
is there a list of known bugs?
babilen
addikt1ve: Why?
!bts
dpkg
Bug Tracking System for Debian packages, http://bugs.debian.org/ or to go directly to the bug page for a particular package/bug, try http://bugs.debian.org/packagename or http://bugs.debian.org/bugnumber . aptitude install reportbug, and check out <querybts> too. Users of unstable and testing are required to check the BTS. Useful for unstable and testing: aptitude install apt-listbugs apt-listchanges
wols_
!tell addikt1ve about lenny->sid
addikt1ve
is there anything else to do than s/lenny/sid/g in /etc/apt/sources.list?
abrotman
addikt1ve: if you're asking, don't do it
addikt1ve
abrotman: if you don't know, don't answer
abrotman
i do know ..
addikt1ve
so tell me :)
abrotman
i'm telling you that if you don't know .. don't do it
addikt1ve
I've been using debian for a while, and I used to hate it :p
abrotman
i'm not in the business of helping people screw up their machines
especially not a server
wols_
addikt1ve: if you hate it, please install ubuntu instead. thank you
addikt1ve
I'm not in the business of discussing philosophical aspects of an upgrade
abrotman
then go learn how to do it .. don't beg
wols_
addikt1ve: remember: YOU want help from US. better adjust your behaviour
addikt1ve
that's what I thought
babilen
*sigh*
addikt1ve: Why do you want to upgrade to sid?
abrotman
please don't ask that .. you'll get an answer you don't want
babilen
!tell addikt1ve about sid upgrade test
addikt1ve
actually I want to upgrade to testing
wols_
why not? !sns is always fun to type
addikt1ve: please answer to babilen. he really wants to help you even if you don't believe it
addikt1ve
I'm an heavy archlinux user
abrotman
addikt1ve: testing and unstable don't have any real security support, if this is a public server, it will get compromised
addikt1ve
I don't know debian this much but I've been using it for years
I want to upgrade
what's the big deal?
abrotman
no security support? broken packages? non-booting systems?
peterrooney
addikt1ve: testing is NOT STABLE.
addikt1ve
abrotman: that's the fun :)
abrotman
addikt1ve: then please go learn how to do this yourself
wols_
the big deal is, testing and unstable break. often. they have no security support. So if soemone doesn't know a fair amount of stuff about debian, it's basically a disaster in the making
we don't want people to live through disaster and then think "debian sucks"
peterrooney
addikt1ve: testing guarantees problems with package management, which, working, is part of the beauty of debian.
abrotman
and he still didn't answer babilen
addikt1ve
wols_: I already think that debian sucks, and I'm not going to cry :')
rvsjoen
I don't have the impression that testing breaks very often
abrotman
addikt1ve: what is wrong with lenny? why do you feel you need testing/unstable ?
wols_
rvsjoen: you're right. but usually when it does, the breakage is worse in my experience. harder to actually fix
abrotman
rvsjoen: it depends on what you're using it for .. some stuff breaks all the time
addikt1ve
abrotman: yes I do
wols_
sid breaks a lot more but you can hammer it into submission a lot easier
abrotman
addikt1ve: that was a question .. not a yes/no
rvsjoen
true
addikt1ve
abrotman: that was the answer
abrotman
if it smells like a troll ...
rvsjoen
heh
babilen
addikt1ve: What are you trying to achieve? We don't care about your attitude towards Debian, but I don't think that many people want to help you if you show that kind of attitude.
addikt1ve
you all sound interesting
why is it SO important to know the reasons of an upgrade?
the more you ask the less I want to answer
abrotman
because you're asking us for help to break your computer
addikt1ve
it's not your business :)
haha
babilen
addikt1ve: Please, stop wasting our time. If you want to get some work done ask precise questions and state your rationale ..
wols_
addikt1ve: we feel likewise. have fun figuring it out yourself. good day
