then chroot?
Titan8990
jamesuk, yes
jamesuk, well, did you mount proc the first time?
jamesuk, also give this a try: mount -t none proc /mnt/proc
jamesuk, prior to chroot
dmz
nm.,..it was nscd interfering with it
jamesuk
Titan8990: I think I mounted /proc the first time. However, I've just chroot'ed with out the "mount -t none proc /mnt/proc".
Titan8990
yeah, you can chroot without either one, but may have trouble doing things
jamesuk
OK, I will reboor again and try. But in the mean time I've just tried re-installing the linux-image and it didn't work. Rebooting now.
Titan8990: "mount -t none proc /mnt/proc" failed with error "mount: Mounting proc/ on /mnt/proc/ failed: No such device"
Looking at the console / proc is there and it contains a number of entries. So amd consused why it didn't mount.
Titan8990
jamesuk, sorry, but I have to run now
jamesuk, I suggest moving over to #debian on irc.freenode.net
jamesuk
Titan8990: Thanks for all your help.
Titan8990
jamesuk, np, I will still be around just need to get some work done

OK, thanks. I'm going to keep going.....

After an update yesterday I now have a networking problem. I can longer connect to the ubuntu machine I use as a media server. The machine that was updated runs lenny with a 2.6.30 kernel. Basically where I used to see the mount for the ubuntu machine, all I see now is Windows Network and when I click on it I am prompted for a password - only none of mine work.
Titan8990
rufensis, where did you get the .30 kernel for lenny?
Event-Horizon
Q
rufensis
Titan8990: I messed up above. I'm actually using Squeeze. The kernel I got some time ago. Backports? I think. I did not have to compile it myself.
Titan8990
rufensis, what protocol is the media server running? cifs?
rufensis
Titan8990: it has libsmbclient installed. Is that what you mean?
Titan8990
rufensis, how do you access the media server?
rufensis
Titan8990: always through a linksys router, and the sever is connected to it by ethernet. The laptop client used to connect through wireless and ethernet, both machine's devices are managed by network manager.
Titan8990
rufensis, there are tons of file transfer protocols... you could be uses SMB/CIFS, FTP, HTTP, avahi, or any number of different methods of accessing files on a different server
rufensis, which do you use?
rufensis
Titan8990: how can I query that from my system? I have never had to adjust anything to either machine. They both just worked together and discovered each other before.

Hi All. Any powerpc experts out there? I'm experiencing strange framebuffer and keyboard problems on an IBM 44p-170 after upgrading.
faheem
anyone know why debhelper does that and what it means?
Titan8990
faheem, does what?
faheem
Titan8990: 12:17 -!- mode/#debian [+l 391] by debhelper
what's it doing?
rufensis
Titan8990: I am almost sure I am using smb for the protocol. I can at least see shares on the laptop client when I click on networks on the ubuntu machine. It shows a Print share on the debian laptop and under properties "smb://" in the location.
faheem
for clarity, i'm referring to debhelper the channel bot :-)
metalqga
faheem raises the limit for users who can join the #?

faheem: changing the limit to the number of people in the channel -- preventing bot floods
Titan8990
rufensis, I don't use SMB/CIFS, nor do I know much about it
rufensis, when you upgraded did it alter your /etc/smb.conf or w/e it is?
rufensis
Titan8990: not that I know of
Titan8990: what do you use?
Titan8990
rufensis, NFS or http/webdav
avahi looks interesting but I have got around to trying it
rufensis
Titan8990: I used to use NFS and then a year ago or so on an older machine I was having trouble and someone in this forum told me NFS was obsolete. NFS-common is installed on my laptop.

Before asking in here or on the debian-user mailing list, you should read the Installation Guide, or if you already have Debian installed, the Debian Reference. Ask me about <ig>, <reference>, <docs>, <manuals>, <fundamentals>, <newbiedoc>, <refcard>, <faq>, <unix lessons>, <general cli tutorial>. (e.g. in your IRC client, type /msg dpkg reference)

Titan8990: I managed to get some where with my problems. I needed to mount /dev/pts, then aptitude purge linux-image and then re-installed. The system will boot to grub but I just need to work out how to enter the phasephrase to decrypt the LVM. Looks like I need to add some additional info to grub menu.lst. Thanks for the help.
Titan8990
jamesuk, good to hear
rufensis, FTP is also "obsolete"
rufensis, but you see how widely used that is
nothing compares to FTP or NFS speed
rufensis
Titan8990: True. Do you know if nfs and smb interfere with each other. Do I need to strip my systems of smb to make nfs work? I wouldn't mind having the "Windows network" icon gone.

Anyone got some pointers on how to deal with an unresponsive laptop keyboard during installation ? I can plug in a USB keyboard but that way I won't know if the keyboard (on the laptop) will ever work. Any general tips/pointers ? (Specifically, it's a Macbook Pro 5,1 unibody)
kop
icarus: All I know is that there are settings for keyboard detection, somewhere.
icarus
kop: what do you mean ?
Perhaps I should elaborate a little. The keyboard works in the initial boot menu, but as soon as the kernel is loaded and the ncurses menus take over, the keyboard is unresponsive.
kop
icarus: There are parameters you can pass to the kernel that have something to do with the keyboard, and there's also something in /etc/console* (maybe) that does something as well. But I don't know what. So, the answer is 'maybe'.

icarus: you could also try the graphical installer. It might work there.

I think I'm going to start building a list of kernel parameters and going from there :)
kop
icarus: This page http://www.odi.ch/prog/macbookpro/index.php says a firmware update will help. (But I don't know if it's for a 5.1)
icarus
kop: thanks :) But it seems to be the older MBP's (4 point something) based on the picture he included of his laptop
kop
icarus: It might possibly have to do with this: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=515866
icarus
Might be, but I'm leaning a bit for this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=953995. Someone posted that his laptop (a vostro, though) exhibited the same problems until he configured things to pass this kernel parameter. But it doesn't seem to work, I don't know if your link will either as some talk of Macbook 2,1 which is about as different from my Macbook 5,1 as any other laptop ;) I guess I'll have to find a USB harddrive to m
